The Swing Bridge

Belize / Americas

The Swing Bridge was built in 1923 and spans Haulover Creek, a tributary of the Belize River and is the vital link connecting the north of Belize City with the south. It is the oldest Swing Bridge in Central America and one of the few still manually operated, requiring four men to crank it by hand from a position in the centre until it is parallel with the Creek. It takes the same number of men to crank it back to its original position. This process would stop the traffic for over an hour. It is a tourist attraction in its own right.

There were wooden bridges built here in 1818 and 1859. This bridge was originally constructed in Liverpool, England by the Jefferson Construction company, and transported here by a United States company, based in New Orleans. It used to be opened once in the morning and once in the evening, enabling sailing fishing boats with tall masts to pass by and continue upriver to deliver supplies and services to the city. Since 2007 it has only been opened in emergencies due to hurricanes. The swing bridge was featured in the 1980 film The Dogs of War with Christopher Walken and Tom Berenger by the Jefferson Construction company and transported here by a United States company, based in New Orleans.
