The New Parliament Building was opened in 2015, to some controversy, moving the seat of government to these new premises. Like the City Gate it was designed by Renzo Piano. Again the stone was quarried locally, a huge operation. The construction work was undertaken by the building firm, Halmann Vella. The Parliament building stands on the right hand side as you enter Valletta. The windows are designed to catch fascinating shadows at different times of the day.In order to build this here, an unsightly parking lot was removed from Freedom Square. The building consists of two huge blocks of stone resting on slender columns. The northern block contains the Parliament chamber and the southern block the offices of the Members of Parliament, the Prime Minister and the Leader of the Opposition. The two blocks are separated by a central courtyard affording views to St James’s Cavalier behind. The façade is finished in solid stone, sculpted as if it has been eroded by the sun. The aim was to create architecture that fitted into the historical context but also to reflect cutting edge technology.
