The Public Market Place was opened in 1972 where the Roseau river meets the sea. It is considered one of the city’s main attractions, at its best from late on a Friday night through Saturday morning when truckloads of farmers and vendors descend on the city from the hills and spread out every variety of fruit and vegetables, red meats and poultry, root crops and flowers. This is a pageant that has taken place through the centuries and visitors can admire the West African manner of displaying produce in heaps and patterns on the ground.
