The Institute of Jamaica

Jamaica / Americas

The Institute of Jamaica was established at 10-16 East Street in 1879 by Sir Anthony Musgrave (1828-88), then Governor of Jamaica.  The Institute is led by its mandate: ‘For the Encouragement of Literature, Science and Art in Jamaica’.   It was regarded as the chief agency designed to help Government in the promotion and preservation of culture on the island.  Edna Manley (1900-87) considered that the Institute stood like a beacon as the only body that encouraged any of the arts or sciences.
