The Gus Fisher Gallery, in the Kenneth Myers Centre, is a historic building, restored by Gus Fisher in 2000. It is the University of Auckland’s flagship artspace displaying contemporary art. It reopened in April 2019. It shows and supports New Zealand based artists and aims to bring ground-breaking artworks to New Zealand for the first time.
The Gallery is housed in a 1934 Grade 1 listed heritage building, which used to be occupied by Radio 1YA and TVNZ. Gus Fisher (1920-2010) who founded the gallery, was a prominent fashion designer, and Managing Director of El-Jay, who produced Christian Dior’s designs under licence in Auckland. He was a keen art lover who started collecting 20th-century works in the early 1960s.
