The Crispin Pub, on the corner at 56 Grove Road, is a popular venue, with live singers on certain nights. It is named after St Crispin, the Patron Saint of Cobblers and his saint’s day is celebrated on 25 October. Shoemaking was traditionally a hand making industry until the engineer Marc Brunel developed machinery for the mass-production of boots for the soldiers of the British Army. In 1812 The Duke of York supported the production of a scheme for making nailed-boots that were strong, cheap and durable enough to be used by the army to help the fight the Napoleonic war.
