St. John’s Maroon Church is a methodist church. It is one of the oldest churches in Sierra Leone. It was built by the Marrons who settled here in 1800. It is thought they these Maroon’s converted to Christianity through the influence of the Nova Scotians who were already in the Colony. This church was built in 1822. It was regarded as an act of holding onto their newfound faith. For this reason, this church was the hub for social and religious activists amongst the people of Maroon town. St. John’s Maroon Church is a small white building with large windows. It stands as an example of Krio architecture as it was built by the slaves from Jamaica. Therefore, this church is rich in history and is significant to the people of Sierra Leone.
