This memorial exists due to a lengthy campaign by film director Michael Winner who after the death of PC Yvonne Fletcher on 17 April 1984 founded the Police Memorial Trust. It was unveiled by Her Majesty The Queen in 2005 and designed by Lord Foster and Per Anoldi. It commemorates police officers killed in the UK during the course of duty. Made up of a black granite tablet with the Metropolitan Police crest and the words ‘Police Memorial Trust’ carved into it, it has a glass chamber set in to its face with a Book of Remembrance containing the names of every British policewoman and policeman killed on duty. The pages of the book are turned every two weeks by the Police Memorial Trust. The piece of glass emerging from a reflective pool glows to echo the blue lamps which once existed outside every police station.Â
