Napoleon Bonaparte famously resided in St Helena in exile until his death on 5 May 1821. Napoleon requested to buried on the banks of the Seine, however, Hudson Lowe, a British Governor, insisted that he be buried on St. Helena, in Sane Valley. There was a lot of conflict regarding Napoleon’s inscription. This resulted in the tomb being left nameless. Furthermore, Napoleon’s body is no longer in the tomb. It was collected by Prince de Joinville in 1840 and taken back to France to be placed in L’Hotêl Les Invalides. Despite the tomb being empty, the land surrounding the tomb was sold in 1858 to the French Government. It now remains as a reminder of Napoleon’s exile on Saint Helena.
