Morne Fortuné Military Cemetery is the burial ground for French and British soldiers and civilians on the Morne. The French are represented by two un-named tombs, while in the British cemetery several past Governors are buried, the most recent being Sir Ira Simmons (1917-74), Saint Lucia’s second native Governor. The earliest known grave is that of Emillia, wife of Major-General, Alex Wood, CMG, who died on 8 November 1810. There were also mass graves at this site, containing the many who died from epidemics of Yellow Fever, Cholera and other illnesses.
