Mesquita da Baixa was built modestly on this site in 1876 when Lourenço Marques was still a small village surrounded by marshes. In 1887 the current elaborately decorated building was constructed in a richly ornate Arabic style. It was remodelled in 1902. The mosque, with its sloping walls, is unique in that it does not emulate any existing structures.
