Matautu

Samoa / The Pacific

Mata’utu is a village on the northern coast of Upolu Island on the eastern side of the capital city, Apia. It is the site of Apia’s main harbour, with the wharf and marina. The village is divided into two parts, Mata’utu-tai (on the coast) and Mata’utu-uta (inland). Mata’utu-tai is led by the High Chief To’omalatai. There is a legend that those who arrive by sea must stop and give offerings to the To’omalatai before being granted safe passage by Moaula, the village guardian, hailed as one of the most revered spirits of Sãmoa. From here the ferries depart.  Here you can learn about the history of the famous ships.
