Hill Knoll fort sits 600 meters above sea level. It is the most prominent and largest fort on St Helena. Overlooking Jamestown, this 1874 fort was built by the Royal Engineers. It was built on a pre-existing structure from 1790. The earlier fort was a high and square structure with two towers and stone ramparts. The High Knoll Fort was built to help defend St Helena from potential French invaders. During the Second Boer War, Boer prisoners from South Africa were incarcerated at this fort. Much later, the fort was used to house wild-stock. Today it is has been restored and is open to the public. This is another location that offers beautiful views of St. Helena.
