Echo Creek empties Vermilion Lake into the Bow River. The creek winds through a forest of large spruce, past old beaver lodges and dams and eventually opens up into the marshland that borders the lake. Elk can often be seen grazing, ducks and geese swimming stealthily among the rushes and the song of warblers fills the air.Groups of hunter-gatherers have camped along the shores of Vermilion Lakes for thousands of years. The oldest site to date is a roughly 10,800-years-old located at the western edge of the lake. With its preserved postholes, fire pit and faint circular outline that could indicate the edge of a tent, it’s Canada’s oldest human dwelling.
