Dame Margaret Karika (1919-2017) was a national icon, an important tribal leader and also patron of a great number of organisations. She was described as a treasured icon, a true all-rounder, an active sportswoman, a keen environmentalist, who was still taking an active part in the life of the Cook Islands until her death at the age of 98.
She was an Ariki, who held the title of Makea Karika Ariki from 1949 to 2017. She was twice President of the House of Ariki 1978-80, and 1990-92, and served on the Legislative Assembly from 1958 to 1961. She was made DBE in 2012. On her death, she was accorded a state funeral.
