Clock Tower

Seychelles / Africa

The Seychelles Clock Tower, or Lorloz in Creole, is the most prominent feature of Seychelles’ capital. It has been a main attraction in Victoria for nearly 100 years. Despite Seychelles constant modern changes and adaptions, the Clocktower stands untouched. It is an elegant replica of the clock that was first erected in Victoria Street, London. Seychelles’ governor Sir Ernest Sweet-Escott wanted this tower to be replicated after he had admired it in London. It was made by Messrs Gillet and Johnson of Croydon and paid by public subscription. The Clocktower was erected in 1903, the same year that Victoria celebrated its new status as a Crown Colony. It now stands as a national monument. This Clocktower also chimes every hour.
