Civic Square is the formal reception room of Wellington. Originally this was a continuation of Mercer Street down to it’s intersection with Cuba Street, however in the early 1990’s the streets were opened to people and closed to traffic so that the Square could be built. The City Library (the wavy glass building) is New Zealand’s largest and busiest, so busy that it receives more visitors per year than Te Papa. Next to it is the City Gallery. The City to Sea Bridge joins the Square to the Wellington Waterfront, functioning as a bridge as much as an elevated extension to the Square. Fronting the south side of the square are the Michael Fowler Center, Town Hall and Civic Administration Buildings, which is home on the ground floor to the Wellington Information Centre for tourists.
