The Central Market is an art deco building in a pedestrian section of Rodger Street (Jalan Hang Kasturi). It was originally a wet market (i.e. one that sells perishable goods). It was built by the British in 1888 and expanded many times over the years. In the 1970s it was in danger of being demolished but was given ‘Heritage Site’ status. It was renovated in a colourful style in 1985 and is now known as Pasar Budaya. There is a Central Market Annexe at the back which houses a number of eclectic art galleries.
