In 1624, the Montserrat Counsel ordered the Negros living in the East of the Island to travel to Carr’s Bay in December to build a gun battery and return to the East in January. The gun battery was strategically placed at Carr’s Bay to defend the island against approaching ships. Today the Carr’s Bay Gun Battery is used as a picnic area in addition to being a popular tourist attraction.
